Castel Sant’Angelo, also known as Hadrian’s Mausoleum, is one of the most fascinating buildings in Rome and one of Italy’s most visited sites: on this page you will find the different purchase options and ticket prices for your visit to the museum, as well as basic information (opening hours and accessibility) to better organise your experience.
Before we begin, a brief preamble: online ticket booking for Castel Sant’Angelo is strongly recommended.
By booking in advance, you will avoid long queues and crowds at the ticket office and can choose from different ticket types (e.g. guided tours) that may no longer be available if you buy your ticket on the spot.
If you have to make a quick decision, the most popular option is the basic ticket with reserved entrance (skip the line), which allows you free entry to the Castle and the National Museum of Castel Sant’Angelo while skipping the ticket line.
You can add the audio guide to this ticket, or you can consider booking a guided tour to dive deeper into the history and architecture of this iconic monument.
If you want to save money, however, I recommend the combined tickets, which allow you to add another attraction in Rome, such as the Colosseum or the boat tour, to your ticket for the castle.After this long introduction, now let’s discover together all the types of tickets to access Castel Sant’Angelo Rome!

Visiting Castel Sant’Angelo: Brief Description of the Tour
Below is the experience of a castelsantangeloroma.it member, who took a tour inside the attraction:
On my last trip to Rome, I chose to buy online a skipping ticket with audio guide for my visit to the wonderful Castel Sant’Angelo;
I chose to book my entry on a warm morning in the middle of the week, as I was looking for a time slot that would give me maximum comfortableness and above all plenty of time to take photos and notes;
A few minutes before my appointment I crossed the Ponte Sant’Angelo and, having arrived in front of the entrance to the National Museum of Castel Sant’Angelo, I looked around. I immediately recognised the girl from Touristation by her divisa and turned to her for the exchange of my voucher. With her help, I then converted my voucher into an actual entrance ticket and downloaded the POPGuide app onto my smartphone;
This app ensured that I had a map of the castle at my fingertips at all times and an audio guide that could be activated as soon as I was near a point of interest. In order not to disturb other users, I decided to use my Bluetooth earphones to listen to the guide;
From the entrance, the path is essentially free, although the numbering of the rooms suggests an ideal itinerary that proceeds by levels. In fact, the castle is ideally composed of seven levels that start from the Ambulacrum of Boniface IX, i.e. the court between the castle cylinder and the outer walls, and rise up to the Terrazzo dell’Angelo;
The POPGuide app features eighteen audio tracks that, as the tour progresses, help to better understand the history of the different environments that make up the castle. If desired, the tracks can also be read.
Here are, in order, the tracks I listened to during my visit to Castel Sant’Angelo:.
- the outside;
- fortification, bastions;
- the Passetto di Borgo;
- the Shooting Court and the Chapel of the Condemned;
- the Dromos and the Atrium, the Interior and the Elicoidal Ramp Elicoidal Ramp;
- the Rampa diametrale;
- the Urn Hall;
- the Cortile dell’Angelo;
- the Hall of Apollo;
- the “Giretti“;
- the Loggia of Paul III;
- the Library Room;
- the Treasure Room;
- the Terrazza dell’Angelo;
- the Panoramic view from the Terrace;
- the Sala Paolina;
- the Loggia of Julius II;
- the Courtyard of Alexander VI;
The tracks can be freely re-read and listened to even when one is not in the environment they describe;
I must say that I am glad that I bought my ticket with audioguide already online: it allowed me to skip the queue that was forming in front of the ticket offices and guaranteed me on-site support from the staff of a specialised tourism organisation like Touristation;
Moreover, the comfortable audio guide was able to give me the freedom of movement that I was looking for, allowing me to visit Castel Sant’Angelo in the manner I preferred;

Castel Sant’Angelo Roma Ticket Price: FAQ
You can buy tickets online on the website or at the official ticket office located at the Castle entrance. However, due to the long queues that may form at the ticket office (especially in high season), we strongly recommend that you book skip-the-line tickets by clicking here. Personally, I recommend purchasing the ticket with the guided tour of the National Museum of Castel Sant’Angelo, where you can visit the fortress, the papal flats, the terraces and the gardens in a carefully planned itinerary by an expert guide.
The standard Castel Sant’Angelo Rome ticket includes a visit to Castel Sant’Angelo, the National Museum, the interior of the castle (with the papal flats and other rooms) the terrace and the gardens. By purchasing the skip-the-line ticket, you can access the attraction by skipping the queue at the ticket office.
Tickets for Castel Sant’Angelo range in price from €19. The price is higher for guided tours (starting at 50€) and it is also possible to buy combined tickets with other attractions (such as the Pantheon, St Peter’s Basilica or the Vatican Museums) or experiences (such as tours of Rome by bus or boat).
Reservation is not compulsory but strongly recommended due to the long queues that may form at the ticket office (especially in high season).
Tickets for the Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome can be booked online or by calling the offices on +39 06 6819111. Once you have completed the online booking procedure, you will receive a voucher by e-mail, which allows you to go directly to the entrance of the Castle avoiding the long queue at the ticket office.
Access to the National Museum of Castel Sant’Angelo is free on the first Sunday of every month. Under 18 years of age, access is free.
A visit to the Castel Sant’Angelo National Museum lasts on average 2 hours. If you are travelling with children and/or have little time available, you can dedicate 1 hour to the visit, while if you are an art history enthusiast it is recommended to stay for 3-4 hours. For more info, read the article where I talked about how long the visit to Castel Sant’Angelo lasts.
Inside Rome’s Castel Sant’Angelo you can admire the papal flats, the prisons where all kinds of prisoners were held, the execution camp, frescoes and well-preserved architectural elements. A visit to the National Museum of Castel Sant’Angelo is highly recommended for anyone wishing to visit Rome and delve into a piece of the eternal city’s history.
