DEAR SIR/MADAM
I WOULD LIKE TO ASK IF THERE IS FREE ACCESS FOR ALL IN THE FIRST SUNDAY OF OCTOBER?
REGARDS
KONSTADINOS
Hi Konstadinos,
On the first Sunday of each month, museums, archaeological parks, and state cultural sites offer free admission to all visitors, allowing them to once again enjoy a unique initiative aimed at promoting the appreciation of Italy’s cultural heritage.
Among these is also included the Castel Sant’Angelo Museum.
Kind regards,
Alberto
I would like to inquire if there is a luggage storage option because I am arriving from the airport with a backpack and I read that larger backpacks cannot be brought in. Thank you for Your response. Mónika
Hi Monika,
Unfortunately, Castel Sant’Angelo does not offer a luggage storage service. In addition, for security reasons, large backpacks are not allowed inside the monument. Therefore, it is recommended to store your backpack at a nearby luggage storage facility before your visit.
Here are two reliable and convenient options located just a few minutes’ walk from Castel Sant’Angelo:
– Vicino Castel Sant’Angelo,
About 5 minutes on foot from Castel Sant’Angelo
Open from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM
€5 per bag per day
– Stow your bags San Pietro, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II 310, 00186 Roma
Located between Castel Sant’Angelo and St. Peter’s Basilica
Open daily from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM
Prices starting at €5 per locker
It is advisable to book in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons, to ensure availability.
Once your backpack is stored, you can enjoy your visit to Castel Sant’Angelo without concern.
Wish you a lovely holiday in Rome,
Alberto
Alberto
If we visit on first Sunday in June, is it correct that we just show up and receive tickets at the entrance? If we arrive around 9am opening time, are we likely to have any problems getting in? Do you reach capacity on free days for entrance? Is there typically a long line at that early hour on free Sundays?
Dear Lori,
if you’re visiting Castel Sant’Angelo on the first Sunday of June, you can simply show up at the entrance without a reservation. On these “free museum Sundays,” entry is free for everyone, and there’s no need—or even possibility—to book a ticket in advance: you just get it at the ticket office by waiting in line.
Arriving around 9:00 a.m., right at opening time, is definitely a smart choice. While these free-entry days do attract many visitors and lines can form, coming early means you’ll likely avoid the longest waits and get in without any trouble. Castel Sant’Angelo is a large site, and although it gets busy on these Sundays, it rarely reaches full capacity so early in the day.
Enjoy your visit to Castel Sant’Angelo!
Warm regards,
Alberto
Hello! I would like to visit the castel in the evening. Is that possible on evenings where there are no events going on? For example, will we be able to enter after 17:00 on August 21, 2025?
Dear Katie,
We are pleased to confirm that on August 21 there are no special events scheduled at Castel Sant’Angelo.
You are therefore very welcome to visit and explore the monument that evening.
Please note that the last admission is at 6 p.m. , and the site closes at 7.30 p.m. , so we suggest arriving before 5 p.m. to fully enjoy your experience.
Enjoy your visit to Castel Sant’Angelo!
Best regards,
Alberto
